Injuries related to electric scooter and bicycle use in a Washington, DC, emergency department

Objective E-scooter use has grown rapidly in the United States. Its rise popularity coincided with promotion of cycling many cities, but more needs to be known about how these transportation modes compare determine if should serve as an appropriate benchmark for policy decisions and safety expectations regarding e-scooters.Methods We examined characteristics adults seeking treatment a Washington, DC, emergency department (ED) injuries associated riding e-scooters during 2019 (n = 99) or bicycles 2015–2017 337).Results incidents less frequently involved moving vehicles (13.1% vs. 37.7%) occurred on roads (24.5% 50.7%) than incidents. A smaller proportion injured e-scooter riders were ages 30–49 (32.3% 48.4%) larger 50 older (34.3% 22.6%) female (45.5% 29.1%). Distal lower extremity common among 3.0%; RR, 2.76; 95% CI, 1.79–3.54), proximal upper (9.1% 20.5%; 0.49; 0.24–0.92) chest, abdomen, spine (3.0% 14.0%; 0.24; 0.07–0.70) common. Head injury rates similar, often experienced concussion loss consciousness (4.0% 0.6%; 3.03; 1.20–4.09) far likely wear helmets (2.0% 66.4%). Estimated ED presentation per million miles traveled citywide higher cyclists (RR, 3.76; 3.08–4.59).Conclusions E-scooters are both popular forms micromobility, them, ways which they become injured, types sustain differ substantially. rider rates, though currently high, may decrease gain experience; however, number new users continues climb, will persist using mile that travel.
